Our People The Bion Team Bion Biometrics consists of a team of highly trained professionals with expertise in biometrics, standards, testing, project management and software development. Dr. John Campbell leads the Bion team, and is internationally recognized for his expertise in the development and testing of algorithms and sensors for multiple biometric modalities. Since attaining his Ph.D. in solid state physics, he has spent over ten years developing pattern recognition algorithms, biometric algorithms and systems, participating in standards development, designing test protocols, and advising governments and international organizations on biometrics. Most notably, he has recently designed and conducted, on behalf of Bion Biometrics, global interoperability tests for the fingerprint systems used with the ILO Seafarers’ Identity Document (SID) program. Over his career, Dr. Campbell has lead research and development groups in both the public and private sector. Today, he uses his expertise to ensure that the Bion team delivers projects on time and on budget, regardless of the project—whether it is developing new standards, performing tests on biometric products and systems, or delivering custom consulting services or products to clients. Mastery of Biometric Standards Bion team members have extensive experience in biometric standards and actively participate in biometrics standards bodies including: ANSI INCITS M1 Biometrics (US), SCC CAC Biometrics (Canada) and ISO/IEC JTC-1 SC 37 Biometrics (international). Dr. Campbell is a special expert advisor on biometrics to the International Labour Organization (ILO), a UN agency, and serves as its representative to ISO SC 37. Other international bodies that have sought advice from Bion experts include the International Organization for Migration, the OECD-ICAO Experts Team on Enhancing International Travel Security, and the European Parliament. Leaders in Testing Bion team members have unparalleled expertise in conformance, interoperability and performance testing. They have orchestrated test data acquisition from multi-national teams, using a coordinated combination of ground, air and space assets. They have also worked with individual vendors to resolve conformance issues with a singe piece of software using a single biometric standard. Whatever the assignment, Bion team members can ensure that a test and the data it generates are scientifically valid, useful and cost effective. Bion team members have extensive and demonstrated experience in testing. They have recently completed three separate finger minutiae interoperability tests for the ILO—among the first such tests undertaken anywhere. The team has tested over twenty different biometric products for conformance to various standards and developed testing methodologies and tools that are unequalled in accuracy and reliability. Among the hundreds of test assertions they have developed for different biometric standards, many are now themselves being standardized. Consultants Who Can Help Bion team members have extensive experience in consulting, both for initial advice and developing project prototypes. They have assisted with procurements or designed systems related to traveller processing, border management, identity management and document management for governments and international organizations in North America, Europe, and Asia. The Bion team has also developed prototype systems for identity and document management. Decades of expertise in object oriented programming, GUI and workflow design, database architecture and scalable systems are all brought to bear by the Bion team when a design or implementation project is undertaken.
