Conformance Testing

What Is Conformance Testing?
Conformance testing validates whether a product conforms to a particular set of standards or specified requirements from those standards. The details of a conformance test vary substantially depending on the nature of the standard against which conformance is being tested. Data format standards, such as the ANSI and ISO fingerprint minutiae standards, require detailed analysis of input and output files and the relationships among data fields. Application programming interface standards, such as BioAPI, require functional testing of all the calls, including error conditions that a software product must support to be conformant to the standard. Regardless of the details, all conformance tests are conducted according to established testing standards and protocols. Moreover, the test results themselves are neutral (either a product is conformant or not) and based upon the objective application of the testing criteria and requirements. Depending on the type of testing program, the products that are found to be conformant may be certified or placed on an approved products list.

Benefits of Conformance Testing
Vendors benefit greatly from the early and consistent use of conformance testing during product development. It allows them to objectively evaluate the performance of their product, detect and diagnose potential problems in the early stages of development, make immediate improvements or modifications, and avoid costly delays and redesigns later on. Finally, if a product is approved as being conformant by a third-party testing organization, it can mean increased market visibility and product sales for the vendor.

Buyers and users also benefit from conformance testing as it enables them to make informed decisions when purchasing and implementing biometric products. It gives them the confidence that a product conforms to a known standard and that it will be easier and more cost-effective to implement than a product that is nonconformant or has never been tested. For the buyer, conformance tested products mean less risk and greater peace of mind.
